Gabriel Grela Mesa

URUGUAYAN-AMERICAN MULTI-FACETED INDEPENDENT ARTIST

1 - STATEMENT

I am a multifaceted artist who works independently in multiple technical and intellectual areas, my activities are mainly developed within the field of Painting, Performance and Social Entrepreneurship. My personal brand debuted in 2016, and it was in 2020, when this was definitively established at a professional level. Thanks to more than 5 years of highly demonstrable experience, I possess solid knowledge within the art world.

My innovative spirit allows me to generate growth in a dynamic, efficient and sustained manner, there is no doubt that my creative work brings important benefits to any institution and/or society (see point 4.1 Institutional Experience). Therefore, having an avant-garde person who has the ability to solve problems in a progressive manner, and who generates new growth models from an innate talent with an initial cost of $0, is a great addition to the Human Capital of any organization.

The experience of living and working abroad for 5 years gave me the possibility to see and understand in depth the importance of cultural and ethnic diversity. These realities offered me unique opportunities and challenges that helped me shape my personality and enhance my qualities of reflection, integration, empathy, confidence and social responsibility. Over the years, I strengthened my technical knowledge and emotional skills, elements that have enabled me to self-manage, self-regulate and adapt to any environment very quickly.

As an active individual in civil society, as a leader with a pluralistic perspective, I constantly develop proposals focused on providing answers to the challenges that today's world demands of us, in favor of human beings without distinction of race, sex or philosophical orientation. From my point of view, it is indispensable and "mandatory" to propose artistic-cultural initiatives focused on rescuing and creating the deteriorated values and resources of the social environment. I am a visionary. I see where others do not see, and I identify the needs of others even before they realize it themselves.

1.1 WHAT IS MY VISION?

My vision of art is heterogeneous and that leads me to distinguish objectives of different natures.

  • a- On the one hand, I see art under the "Logic of Profitability", which means that I use this activity as a way to produce sources of work and economic gains.

  • b- On the other hand, I see art under the "Logic of Politics/Ideology" this means that I recognize art as a vehicle of expressive character through which ideas and values of a group, a society and/or a historical epoch are manifested.

  • c- Finally, I see art under the "Logic of Cultural Promotion" this refers to the fact that art is a strategic factor in the governmental agenda. The construction of the National Identity depends on the support, production and promotion of creative industries. Articulation, dialogue and alliances between institutions and citizens.

1.2 WHAT IS MY MISSION?

  • a- As an artist, raise your voice.

  • b- As an entrepreneur, to generate opportunities.

  • c- As a philanthropist, that everyone has the same possibilities.

2 - EDUCATION AND TRAINING

My artistic training has taught me to be disciplined in the use of "Time Resources", which has allowed me to have strategies to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and thus be able to plan short, medium and long term objectives.

It is indisputable that in order to achieve self-fulfillment it is essential to reach our goals, and for this, it is necessary to have the possibility of accessing a good education and to face job opportunities that challenge us. This juncture (combination of factors) gives us the possibility to raise and emancipate our voices with wisdom, reduce inequalities and resolve conflicts effectively. Our activity plays a very important role in people's quality of life, causing a broad and positive impact on the society around us. Even on individuals who will not necessarily establish a relationship with us, future generations.

3 - ACHIEVEMENTS

DEPARTMENT OF STATE

In 2020 I submitted a proposal to the annual call of the U.S. Department of State Family Liaison Office (GTM/FLO) in charge of the Professional Development Fellowship (PDF) program for 2020-2021 which was selected for the quality of the proposal.

Thanks to this, I took an online course at Sotheby's Institute of Art, (Art as a Global Business: Dynamics of the Art Market) where I was able to obtain a certificado. Then, The U.S. Department of State Family Liaison Office (GTM/FLO) published a post on their Facebook account recognizing my work.

4 - WORK/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

4.1 INSTITUTIONAL EXPERIENCE

The opportunity to work at the Consular Section of the Embassy of the United States of America in Lomé, Togo (West Africa) as an Eligible Family Member gave me the opportunity to learn intensively the practical and theoretical aspects of the various bureaucratic procedures performed by the U.S. Department of State around the world. From verifying the veracity of all legal documentation of the applicants on the day of their interview for the tourist or immigrant visa, the verification of the DS-11, DS-82 forms (among others) for US passports, the relief of citizens as Duty Officer after office hours, notaries, birth certificates, death certificates, among others, to the verification of the documents required to obtain a tourist or immigrant visa.

During my performance in the Consular Section as Consular Assistant, I developed the strategic communication plan (Marketing) for the year 2021, I was in charge of updating our tabs in the Embassy's web page with the latest news regarding consular services, I handled internal and external correspondence, entered sensitive information in our software, collaborated with other sections and was responsible for opening and closing the office when there was still no Consular Officer. This last fact required the highest security protocol, to protect the information and physical material of high economic and legal value, safeguarding and avoiding any kind of internal and/or external threat. (See attached Letter from the Consul of the U.S. Embassy in Togo)

4.4 SECTOR AUDIOVISUAL

Since 2013 due to my great passion for the area of "Acting" and in particular in front of the cameras, I took my first steps in the film industry in my hometown (Montevideo). Thanks to this, I have had the opportunity to participate in advertising projects, short films and national and international film productions. This has allowed me to share the film set with outstanding members of the Latin American, American and French scene.

It wasn't until 2018 (thanks to a company that offers talent services for modeling and acting located in Virginia, USA) when I took my first big step. There I made contact for the first time with a Swedish film production company called "Dorobantu Film & Television" through a casting done remotely (online) in Washington DC, to provide services as an actor in a film.

Shortly thereafter, after assiduous communication with the director/founder, I was able to corroborate that the production company is a suitable company specialized in the production of audiovisual works. This certification led me to want to join deeper creative forces, to the point of investing capital in the production of other Swedish film titles.

5 - SOCIAL AND VOLUNTEER PROJECTS

As a "Social Entrepreneur" my actions are reflected in the development of proposals focused on covering the shortcomings of the context itself from cultural projects based on social innovation. In each of the volunteering in which I have participated, I have had different motivations and personal objectives pursued, this led me to get involved in solidarity causes with different directions and purposes. This allowed me to have a wide experience and to discover the deep desire I have for humanitarian aid.

In 2020 I created a proposal called ALE.GRE. an initiative (in development) that seeks to materialize through an Artistic/Cultural center that, through the delivery of scholarships to creative young people, will give answers to social needs.

6 - ART TEACHER

On more than one occasion I have faced situations in which the lack of resources made it difficult to carry out activities, but training in creative thinking helped me to find the necessary means to achieve the desired results. This reality led me to think, incorporate and use waste as raw material, and thanks to this I have been able to build projects from a total lack of resources.
