01- WHO IS GABRIEL GRELA MESA?

Gabriel Grela Mesa is a multi-faceted Uruguayan-American artist who works in the area of Artistic Painting, Performance and Philanthropy.

02- WHAT HAVE I DONE?

As "Artistic Painter" I made my professional debut in 2015 in Uruguay (country of origin) where I had my first exhibition at the Embassy of the United States of America. Subsequently, thanks to my links with various artistic groups in Colombia and Miami, I had the opportunity to exhibit my work in different countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Italy, United States and Togo.

Parallel to my work as "Artistic Painter" I have a great passion for the area of "Acting" and in particular in front of cameras, a fact that led me to start in 2013 (empirically) in the film sector of my city (Montevideo).
I have had the opportunity to participate in advertising projects, short films and national and international film productions. This position has allowed me to share the film set with prominent members of the Latin American, American and French scenes.
In 2018 I met and became associated with a Swedish film production company called "Dorobantu Film & Television" where I participate as an actor and co-financer of film projects in Sweden.

As a "Philanthropist" my actions are reflected mainly in two areas. On the one hand, as an "Art Teacher", I provide workshops focused on drawing, painting and art history, and on the other hand, in "Social Projects", I develop proposals focused on covering the deficiencies of the context where I am.
On more than one occasion I have faced situations in which the lack of resources made it difficult to carry out the activities, so this situation led me to think about, incorporate and use "Waste" as a recyclable raw material. Thanks to this I have been able to build projects from the total lack of resources
At the same time, I develop in my students and myself a conscious attitude towards the value and positive impact of using waste as a production tool.

03- WHAT'S MY VISION?

I perceive artists as the chroniclers of each era! And our art reflects the psychosocial context in which it develops. That is why my artistic proposals seek to reflect on the social events that occur around me.

I observe art under a heterogeneous vision! which leads me to distinguish objectives of different natures.

1- On the one hand I see art under the "Logic of Profitability" this means that, I use this activity to produce economic gains and sources of work, minimizing losses and increasing by maximizing profits.

2- On the other hand, I see art under the "Logic of Politics/Ideology", which means that I recognize art as a vehicle of expressive value through which the ideas and values of a group, a society and a historical period are manifested.

3- Finally I see art under the "Logic of Cultural Promotion" this refers to art as a strategic factor in the government agenda, the construction of the National Identity depends on the support, production and promotion of the creative industries.

04- WHAT'S MY MISSION?

To provide opportunities to everyone who seeks to develop professionally in the field of art under the vision of profitability.
To support the career of artists who suffer discrimination in their profession, promoting and defining together, their concepts, techniques, discourses and concerns.
To find and train professionals who contribute and multiply cultural values, proposing projects that have an impact on their own community.

05- WHAT DRIVES ME TO DO WHAT I DO?

On a personal level, having the opportunity to travel and live around the world has given me the possibility to analyze and experience in depth multiple realities, which has led me to understand the difficulties and responsibilities we have in life as individuals.

From an artistic point of view, this offers me the possibility of absorbing forms, styles and aesthetic concepts so different, that they drive me and constantly demand the exercise of being redefining my work.

From a humanitarian perspective, as an active individual and part of civil society, it is (from my point of view) indispensable and "obligatory" to propose artistic initiatives with a focus on the social, because an art with these characteristics rescues the deteriorated values and resources from the environment.

06- WHERE DOES MY INSPIRATION COME FROM?

My inspiration comes from the relationship with one's context, from direct experience with the community, from immersion in life itself and from social events that happen locally and/or globally.

07- HOW DO I DESCRIBE MY ARTISTIC PRODUCTION IN GENERAL?

I have a university degree in the field of "Drawing and Painting" which makes this area always my backbone when planning my works. I am currently exploring new ways of interweaving my proposals between painting, sculpture and performance, with new technologies, photography, audiovisual and augmented reality.

08- HOW DO I DESCRIBE MY PAINTING TECHNIQUE?

The works have a treatment that oscillates between the "Naturalist" and the "Plantist" these try to resemble the model through the respect of the proportions and the dark light, but sometimes the color is applied in a uniform way, generating completely flat surfaces.

There is a combination between "Pictorial and Plastic" since, sometimes we can appreciate the brush stroke and other times we cannot even perceive it.

As for the use of color, my work is characterized by a strong tendency towards the use of "Expressive" providing or eliminating intensity, drama and symbolism, through the application of the "Psychology of color" arriving to leave for moments the forms represented in a second place.

As far as "Composition" is concerned, the position of my figures are generally placed in a "Foreground" with a "Middle" point of view.

09- WHAT MESSAGE AM I TRYING TO CONVEY TO THE AUDIENCE?

My purpose as an artist is to invite the audience to reflect on human bonds, on love, religion, society, politics. In short, the values that we have developed as individuals and/or as a society.

10- WHY WOULD THESE REASONS INTEREST OTHER PEOPLE?

Because values are what give meaning to our lives, they are what guide our behaviour in the different situations we face.
Therefore, to bring before the spectator the possibility of reflecting on the importance of the pillars, on which human identity is based, serve as a guide for us to be able to live in harmony with what is discordant.

11- WHAT MATERIALS OR MEDIA DID YOU USE TO CONVEY THAT MESSAGE?

I avoid settling for successful formulas already applied, so I always challenge myself with new challenges that force me out of my comfort zone.
I try to investigate the different expressive forms that the materials can provide, as well as their combination.

12- HOW DOES THE CONTEXT CONNECT TO THE PLAY?

My training gave me the possibility and the knowledge to connect sincerely with others and thus, work with people from different economic sources, ages and motor and mental capacities. The context itself dictates what I should do, so it is easier for the public to relate and connect with each other, since they can recognize each other in front of the work.

14- FINAL CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, I develop the technical and intellectual capacities of a professional! to give adequate answers and proposals to the challenges that today's world demands of us. As a future leader trained with a pluralistic perspective, I contribute from my knowledge and actions, the theoretical and practical tools that I have acquired throughout my life.
Thinking creatively helps me to fulfill my objectives even when the goods within my reach are scarce, and consequently this attitude has left me with the teaching that, there is always a way to find multiple alternatives to the challenges of every day.
